Behavior Change Communication (BCC)

What is BCC?

Behavior Change Communication (BCC) is a multi-level tool for promoting and sustaining risk-reducing behavior change in individuals and communities by distributing tailored health messages in a variety of communication channels.

Before they can reduce their risk and vulnerability to HIV, individuals and communities must understand the urgency of the epidemic. They must be given basic facts about HIV/AIDS, taught a set of protective skills and offered access to appropriate services and products. They must also perceive their environment to be supportive of changing or maintaining safe behaviors.

As HIV is primarily a sexually transmitted infection (STI), this requires national and community discussions on sex and sexuality, risk, risk settings and risk behaviors. It also means dealing at the national and community levels with the resulting stigma, fear and discrimination.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic forces societies to confront cultural ideals — and the practices that clash with them. BCC is vital to this process and can set the tone for compassionate, responsible interventions. It can also produce insights into the broader socio-economic impacts of the epidemic.

Objective

The objective of the BCC project is to improve knowledge, skills, practices and behavior of general adult population of Pakistan for protecting themselves and their peers against HIV & AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases in period of three years.

Behavior Change

The specific behavior change objectives of the communication activities are following:
  • Increased use of condoms with non-regular sexual partners
  • use of STI treatment services when they have symptoms of STI and knowledge of the link between STIs and HIV
  • use of disposable syringes for all injections
  • reduction in the numbers of injections received
  • voluntary blood donation (particularly among the age group of 18-30);
  • use of blood that has been screened for HIV, HBV and HCV
  • Displaying tolerant and caring behaviors towards people living with HIV & AIDS and members of vulnerable populations.

Change Objective

Increase perception of risk or change attitudes toward use of condoms
  • increase demand for services
  • create demand for information on HIV and AIDS
  • create demand for appropriate STI services
  • interest policymakers for helping establish more conducive environment for BCC
  • promote acceptance among communities of BCC services and the value of information, and education services
  • increased self-risk assessment
  • increase confidence in condom use
  • increase knowledge about HIV & AIDS, STIs, and VCT and demand for services
  • increase in discussion about HIV & AIDS and STIs
  • increase in knowledge about universal precautions
  • increase and deepen knowledge about STI and VCT services
  • improve attitudes and behavior among healthcare and other service delivery workers who interact with PLHA, sex workers, injecting drug users, and other marginalized groups
